Do you feel like everything is slipping through your fingers…?
The Head of School can be a lonely job, but so too can the Chair of the Board, and both of these roles are critical to the long-term success of the school.
The Head has to put on a strong face of leadership to the community and as such, he or she cannot really confide in any of the staff to share the burden of responsibility. And given the fishbowls that many Heads find themselves in, any friends within the local community are great support for the odd social occasions, but not to share delicate school politics or challenging circumstances. So at a time when the additional stresses imposed by Covid-19 are pushing School Heads to their breaking point, where is the support? Some turn to forums of Heads from other schools, which is a useful source of information, but lacks the personal connection that makes all the difference.
The Chair of the Board faces many similar challenges where the pressure applied in the community can be overbearing and which crowds judgement and perspective. The Chair’s leadership of the board will determine the strength of the relationship with the Head and in turn influence morale within the school community.
This Leadership Mentor Programme consists of a package of 30 minute support consultations that are set at mutually convenient times. These sessions allow for the Chair or Head to speak in confidence, and to discuss strategies and concerns with a view to supporting the wellbeing of the Chair/Head, ensuring that he or she can continue to thrive in these challenging times.
